Fronto-limbic Study of Bipolar Disorder in Children

Specialists at the Center of Excellence on Mood Disorders are interested in improving the diagnosis and treatment of children with bipolar disorder. The Fronto-limbic Study is one of two current studies at the center that directly work towards this goal. Participants include children 7-17 years old who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as well as healthy children of the same age. Participants with bipolar disorder are treated with mood-stabilizing medications over the course of 6 weeks and are given magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to monitor the anatomy and biology of important areas of their brains. These procedures allow a better understanding of how bipolar disorder is associated with development, as well as how medications affect that association.
