Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program
The division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offers a two-year, fully-accredited program of training. The goal of the program is to produce skilled professionals who provide comprehensive medical care for children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders. Graduates will be well prepared for private practice, public service and academic careers. The expertise of our faculty in normal child development and developmental psychopathology provides a strong foundation for the program. As we look toward the future, the role of the child and adolescent psychiatrist will place increasing emphasis on our work with other medical, mental health, and community professionals. Commitment to a multidisciplinary approach is reflected in the makeup of the faculty, with its members having backgrounds in child psychiatry, child psychology, developmental neuropsychology, pediatric neurology, and child psychoanalysis. We have research expertise in Developmental Psychopathology, Mood Disorders, Disruptive Behavior Disorders, and Substance Abuse. Given the limited number of child psychiatrists, it is increasingly important that we work together toward a common goal of promoting mental health in our children. Houston is a culturally diverse city, offering a unique opportunity to learn about children and families from a wide variety of backgrounds, gaining an appreciation for cultural influences on development. We offer a tremendous variety of training sites which allow the child psychiatry resident the opportunity to experience many different roles--primary physician, consultant, team leader, and educator. The Division has placed education as its top priority, maintaining an attitude of curiosity and lifelong learning in our faculty and residents. We have embraced Problem-Based Learning as an important part of our didactic curriculum. We believe residents will find this method of teaching far more interesting and valuable than the traditional lecture format, as it is learner-based, and prepares residents for lifelong learning. Our program changes somewhat from year to year as we continuously strive to make our program better. We are looking forward to the addition of two new faculty members in the upcoming months that will bring clinical and research expertise in Substance Abuse and Mood Disorders. We are excited about our program, and encourage you to apply.
