Construction Update

Update:
Air handling shutdown set

The Controls and Utilities Department will be conducting a shutdown for repairs of air handling unit L7 at the Medical School Building at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8 for approximately 8 hours. This shutdown is being conducted to replace the chilled water valves serving the air handler.

This unit, L7, provides supply air to labs only on Levels 1-7, on the southeast (Webber Plaza) side of the building in the blue and south white sections of the building.

The supply air and exhaust for the affected areas will remain in operation during the entirety of this project; however, the temperature may increase in the labs relative to the temperature fluctuations outside during this time period because there will be no chilled water to cool L7’s supply air.

Mark Ferguson and Joshua Barnhart will be coordinating the shut down.  Please contact Joshua Barnhart at x5952 with any questions or concerns you may have about this project.

Update:
Webber Plaza construction starts April 15

Webber Plaza will be closed April 15 through July 18.  The Webber Plaza Berm Remediation Project is required to correct the forced main piping, which serves as the Medical School’s storm water drainage system into Harris Gully.  Walter P. Moore, the engineer of record, is paying for this remediation of the piping which they designed to the incorrect size. The system was installed per drawings and specifications as a 12” pipe and will be replaced with a new forced main that will graduate in size, from 12” to 16” to 18”, as more storm water lines are introduced into it before it dumps into Harris Gully.  The plan is to have this piping installed by June 29.

The Webber Plaza entrance and Stairwell F will be closed from April 15 until approximately June 29. The Ross Sterling Breezeway will be used as the main entrance to the Medical School until the Webber Plaza entrance can be reopened.

Update:
Holcombe drainage project starts April 1

The City of Houston Public Wrosk and Engineering will initiate a major drainage, waterline, and street reconstruction project along Holcome Boulevard, between Fannin and Braeswood April 1. The project, which is designed to provide drainage improvements within the Harris Gully watershed and reduce the flood potential to the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, Hermann Park, and surrounding areas, will last for 450 calendar days and be completed in phases.

The institutions immediately impacted include: The Critical Care Bldg, Children's Nutrition Res. Center, Feigin Center, TMC Garage 2, UT-Houston Health Science Center, UT-Houston Graduate School of Biomed Sciences, M.D. Anderson Faculty Center, Jesse H. Jones Rotary House International.

The reconstruction by Texas Sterling Construction Co. is anticipated to be completed by May, 2009.  Construction will be between 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. 6 days a week.

  • Shift Holcombe Blvd. traffic both ways to the south portion of newly constructed pavement and temporary pavement in the median.
  • Construct north portion of pavement and project.
  • The 30” waterline, storm inlets and paving will be constructed.

Phase 4: (March 2009 through May 2009)

  • The median and left turn bays will be constructed in both directions.
  • The median, including trees, landscaping, safety items, and irrigation system will be restored.
  • Permanent traffic signals will also be installed.

Other improvements will also be performed on Main St. from Sunset to Holcombe, University Boulevard from Travis Street to Main Street and on Fannin from Holcombe to Bates.  More details will be provided in the following weeks.

The project consists of approximately 7,270 linear feet of 30-inch, 24-inch, 16-inch, 12-inch, and 8-inch water lines, 1050 linear feet of 24-inch storm sewer, 4,400 linear feet of 54-inch, 48-inch, 24-inch, 18-inch, 16-inch, and 12-inch sanitary sewer rehabilitation and total concrete roadway reconstruction with curb and gutter.
