Annual Faculty Meeting May 20

All Medical School faculty are encouraged to attend the Annual Faculty Meeting, which will be held 4 – 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in MSB 3.001.

The meeting will be telecast live to LBJ General Hospital. It also will be available via a link on the Medical School home page following the meeting.

The final agenda will be sent to faculty in advance of the meeting, which is held annually per the Medical School bylaws.

USCS presents 14th Annual University Classified Staff Workshop

The 14th Annual University Classified Staff Workshop is set for 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., June 11 at the IMM Auditorium. The guest speaker will be David Meinz, and the topic this year is “You Be In Charge; Health Matters.”

Registration is now open. To register to receive an invitation to attend the workshop, please visit the workshop Web page to fill out the online submission form. Registration will be accepted through May 18.

Registrants must have their supervisor’s permission to attend.

Dr. Jon Tyson, director, Center for Clinical Research & Evidence-Based Medicine and professor of pediatrics, received the 2009 Maureen Andrew Mentor Award from the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR) May 3 at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in Baltimore.

The Maureen Andrew Mentor Award was established in perpetuity in 2003 by the SPR to honor the contributions of the late Dr. Maureen Andrew to child health research and to the Society for Pediatric Research.

The award recognizes individuals who have served as exemplary mentors for trainees and junior faculty who have successfully developed investigative careers in the field of child health research. To be eligible to receive the award, nominees must be pediatricians who have displayed a sustained record of excellence as a mentor, defined as an individual who demonstrates attributes including, but not limited to, teacher, sponsor, guide, role model, and counselor.

Faculty, students bring wonders of science
to kids

Faculty and students volunteered with hands-on activities at West University Elementary School’s Annual Science Night April 23.

The evening featured seven interactive stations related to biology, chemistry, geology, and astronomy. Medical School volunteers included 31 first-year students (Rebecca Ainsworth, Casey Anderson, Adam Banks, Anthony Burton, Jared Chen, Caroline Chiu, Chris Conner, Matthew Ditzler, Stephen Fisher, Christina Forero, Tiffany Garcia, Jennifer Hau, Blake Harp, Kimberly Hawthorne, Adam Johnson, Amanda Lopez, Kristin Luong, Johnny Mai, Adrianne Morse, Naveed Nosrati, John Ohman, Bryan Pham, Kathleen Ross, Brian Rubin, Michelle Scerbo, Jordan Smith, Britt Solar, David Spak, Thida Thant, Ryan Tillman, and Deran Wong) and nine graduate students (Amanda Brock, Kim Busiek, Gary Chiles, Jennifer Juarez, Ale Klauer, Audrey Nath, Mark Nolte, Kate Pflughoeft, and Jacob Verghese) who staffed the Brain Waves, Natural Selection, and Nutrition Mission stations.

Drs. Michael Beauchamp, assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomy, and Sandeep Agarwal, assistant professor of rheumatology, led the Brain Waves station.

More than 500 children attended the event, which also highlighted West University Elementary student Science Fair projects.

Science Night, which has become a significant outreach activity for the Medical School, was co-chaired by Dr. Theresa Koehler, holder of the Herbert L. and Margaret W. DuPont Professorship in Biomedical Science and professor in the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, and Dr. Stephanie Watowich, of M. D. Anderson, who founded the event three years ago.

Flood door testing set for Saturday

Environmental Health & Safety and Facilities, Planning & Engineering will conduct the annual flood door drill 8:30 a.m. – noon Saturday, May 16, at the Medical School.

During that time, ground level entrances to the Medical School building will be inaccessible, due to the flood doors being closed for 30 minutes each. Access to the building will remain open through the Medical School Extension and through one of the entrances at the Ross Sterling breezeway. Both Ross Sterling doors will be closed during the drill, but not at the same time.

The flood gates for the loading dock and Parking Lot A will be closed during the drill. These gates will be closed at approximately 8:45 a.m. and will remain closed for 10 minutes.

School of Health Information Sciences graduation

Dr. Jack Harris, dean of The University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences (SHIS), welcomes Dr. Brent King, chairman of the Department of  Emergency Medicine at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and the executive vice dean for clinical affairs for the Medical School, during the SHIS commencement ceremony Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the UT Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases Beth Robertson Auditorium. Dr. King was the commencement speaker for the event.

Dr. Jack Smith, dean of the School of Health Information Sciences, welcomes Dr. Brent King as the commencement speaker for the SHIS Class of 2009 graduation. King, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and executive vice dean for clinical affairs, addressed the graduates and their guests at the May 7 ceremony held in the Beth Robertson Auditorium of the IMM.

Dr. Michele Curtis, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, was one of two recipients of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ (ACOG) Issue of the Year Award. This $10,000 award is given to a junior fellow or fellow of ACOG for the development of a thoroughly researched and referenced paper. The topic for this year was "Establishing an Office-Based Patient Safety Program."
