NIH seeks applicants for Pioneer and New Innovator awards

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are seeking applicants for the NIH Director's Pioneer Award and New Innovator Award. Both programs support creative scientists who propose highly innovative-and often unconventional-approaches to major challenges in biomedical and behavioral research. Women and members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. The Pioneer Award provides $2.5 million in direct costs over five years. Applications for this award will be accepted between Dec. 16 and Jan. 16. The New Innovator Award is open to new and early career research investigators only. It provides $1.5 million in direct costs over five years.
Applications will be accepted March 3-31.

Student team competition focuses on geriatric issues

A Houston Geriatric Education Center Team Competition will be held this year for students who are in the last years of their undergraduate programs or in graduate programs.  Students are invited to participate from UT-Houston Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Health Information Sciences, Public Health and Biomedical Sciences, University of Houston Schools of Pharmacy, Social Work and Law, and Texas Woman’s University Schools of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

The experience will require a minimum of 24 hours of commitment over three months time and is available for certificate only (at no cost) or for independent study credit.* The team competition will involve work with an interdisciplinary team to analyze a case and make appropriate recommendations in an elder abuse and/or self-neglect situation.  To help prepare students for this case, the following activities have been planned:

  • One online video on elder mistreatment
  • Five online cases (practice for the competition)
  • One ride along with an Adult Protection Services worker
  • One interdisciplinary TEAM home visit to assess an elder abuse case

Students are offered a unique learning opportunity to engage in the management of a major public health problem with their interdisciplinary peers.  All students will receive a certificate of participation, a medallion with a ribbon in their school colors to wear at graduation, and the winning team will receive a trophy. Students may also register for independent study credit with a faculty member from their discipline.  All interested students should request an application via e-mail from Kyler.M.Godwin@uth.tmc.edu.

Registration:  Nov. 28 – Jan. 11

Orientation: Jan. 28, 2008, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Case Competition: April 7, 2008, 5:30 – 8 p.m.

The presidential search begins
