Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging
Clinical diagnostic imaging is stressed at all levels of training with particular emphasis on correlative exercises with other clinical and basic science programs. During the first academic year, normal radiographic anatomy is an integral component of gross anatomy. At the end of the second year, prior to the beginning of clinical clerkships, a one-week concentrated course in diagnostic imaging is included in the core curriculum.
Clinical electives are available to fourth-year medical students. These emphasize radiologic techniques, indications, and contraindications for various procedures and the fundamentals of diagnostic imaging and intervention. Teaching methods include formal lectures, self-instruction by means of permanent teaching files and programmed lectures, staff and student seminars, and participation in the various subspecialty areas in radiology. Many of the faculty actively participate in teaching conferences of the core clerkships.
The faculty and facilities of the department provide instruction and training in all contemporary imaging modalities, including nuclear radiology, ultrasound, computed tomography, angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and spectroscopy, and diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures.
Clinical radiation therapy is provided through the faculty and facilities at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and is a specialty separate from diagnostic radiology. This service affords experience in the evaluation, care, treatment, and follow-up of cancer patients treated with ionizing radiation either alone, or in conjunction with other modalities.
