The goal of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is to provide medical students, whatever their ultimate medical career choice, with opportunities to acquire (1) an appreciation for the patient as a whole person with an emotional as well as a physical life, (2) the ability to diagnose and treat common mental disorders, and (3) a positive attitude toward the importance of psychological well being. In the second year, medical students are introduced to the biopsychosocial aspects of behavior. Using the life cycle as a framework, human growth and development, determinants of behavior, human sexuality, death and dying, and medical ethics are discussed. Information is presented on interviewing, communication, and interpersonal skills; psychopathology, the psychological and social aspects of mental illness; and, community and preventive medicine. During the third-year clerkship, students spend eight weeks in the Mental Sciences Institute and the Harris County Psychiatric Center where they see and follow patients with various psychiatric syndromes. Clinical and research electives are available to fourth-year students.
