Because pathology is the keystone that bridges the basic sciences and the clinical sciences, the activities of the department are balanced among research, teaching, and service. The goal of the courses is to build on the students’ knowledge of basic science to prepare them for the clinical years. The department is responsible for teaching histology, immunology, pathology, and laboratory medicine and some microbiology to the medical students during the first and second years and provides electives during the third and fourth years. The sophomore pathology course includes didactic lectures as well as laboratories featuring illustrative material and clinicopathological correlation. The course is designed to provide analytical approaches, as well as factual information that medical students need to make rational diagnostic and prognostic decisions. Formal electives of four weeks or more are available to fourth-year students in autopsy pathology, surgical pathology, cytopathology, neuropathology, laboratory medicine, or basic or clinical research arranged with individual faculty members. Research training for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows includes molecular biology, immunohistology, pathology, infectious diseases, heart disease and cancer. The department also has a fully certified residency program in anatomic and clinical pathology.
