The academic goals of the division are to teach the epidemiology of, and how to prevent, screen, diagnose, and treat cancer. The aim is to teach excellence in medicine and medical care by demonstrating cancer biology as well as an empathetic and humanistic approach toward patients as critical components of cancer care to both medical students and house officers. Instruction is both didactic and practical to demonstrate the fundamentals of diagnosis and care of patients with cancer. Common solid malignancies (lung, colon, breast and prostate cancer) are emphasized utilizing a multimodality approach. The research focuses on cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology and pathology, surgery, radiotherapy, immunology and the supporting roles of radiology, neurology, psychiatry, and ancillary care in the treatment of patients with cancer. Molecular biology and genomics are emphasized as the basis of cancer diagnosis and care. The division’s own work in hyperthermic biology and treatment of cancer is present. The division is an integral part of the Medical School’s Department of Internal Medicine and collaborates regularly with the Departments of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology, Surgery, Radiology, and Pathology, as well as the Clinical Research Center. The Division of Oncology also is closely integrated with the Division of Medicine at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and works closely with MDACC’s Divisions of Radiation Therapy, Surgery, and the Departments of Biomathematics and Cellular Biology. These rich interactions greatly enhance the research, teaching, and patient-care activities. The Division of Oncology provides both inpatient, consultation, and ambulatory care services at Memorial Hermann Hospital as well as patient services at the Division of Cancer Medicine at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
