The objectives of this department are the teaching of how microorganisms interact with and respond to their environment at the molecular level. To pursue these objectives, the department faculty members are studying diverse microbial types by applying a molecular genetic/molecular biological focus to its research programs.

A first-year Medical School course is designed to offer the student the opportunity to develop a working knowledge of taxonomy, pathophysiology, and growth characteristics of bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses important to the diseases of man.

A series of cross-appointments with faculty in other departments, divisions, and units having an interest in the training of medical and graduate students is utilized including Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and programs at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
