Division of General Surgery, Trauma, and Critical Care

General Surgery is concerned with the broad aspects of the care of patients who have diseases amenable to or prevented by surgical therapy. Undergraduate and graduate education and research activities in this area include the study of immunology, oncology, nutrition, wound healing bioengineering and metabolism, the treatment of genetic, traumatic, neoplastic, inflammatory and neurohumoral diseases of the head and neck, endocrine glands, breast, skin, blood vessels, lung, esophagus, stomach, liver, bile ducts, pancreas, and large and small bowel.

The junior surgical clerkship is conducted at Memorial Hermann, LBJ General, and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center hospitals. Senior clerkships are provided at these institutions, as well as preceptorships with selected members of the clinical faculty. Summer research students are welcome to participate in the surgical laboratories of the Medical School and its affiliated hospitals.

A first-year course of graduate study offered by a single approved residency program, the content of which is not limited to that of the sponsoring programs, is provided at these institutions, as well as preceptorships with selected members of the clinical faculty.

The graduate program in general surgery offers five years of progressive surgical experience. One or more years of investigative work is provided for those interested in pursuing an academic career. Fellowships also are available in areas of special interest (trauma, critical care, surgical endocrinology, and surgical gastroenterology).
