of Instruction Family and Community Medicine
Family and Community Medicine
Training facilities currently include Memorial Hermann Hospital, Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) General Hospital, the UTP Center for Family Medicine, the Acres Home Community Health Center, and the Aldine Community Health Center. The department, which has faculty at 11 sites in the Houston area, provides medical staffing for five community health centers owned and operated by the Harris County Hospital District. All of these sites are utilized for medical student education.
The department administers the required third-year clerkship in Family Medicine and a required fourth-year preceptorship in Family Medicine. The department offers multiple electives.
The department also administers The UT-Houston Family Medicine Residency Training Program. In addition, the department maintains a relationship with the Memorial Hermann Southwest Residency Training Program, the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital Residency Training Program, and the St. Joseph’s Hospital Family Practice Residency Training Program. These residency programs offer training in the full scope of clinical activities that prepare graduates for practice in both rural and urban settings.
The department is actively involved in research and scholarly activity at its multiple sites. The department offers a two-year Primary Care Fellowship, which includes either a Masters in Public Health or a Master of Science in Clinical Research.
