Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery consists of full-time and volunteer faculty. The activities of the department center on the care of patients with diseases of the cardiovascular system, including heart, aorta, and major vessels as well as lungs and other thoracic structures. The cardiac program includes adult and pediatric, and the vascular surgery program has a clinical focus on aortic (ascending arch and thorocaobdominal) aneurysm. These activities are focused at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Relationships also exist with the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Texas Heart Institute. The faculty of the department participates in the third-year surgery clerkship. Fourth-year medical students may choose electives in clinical or research areas. Research in the Medical School laboratories comprises both basic and applied science investigations on the pathophysiology of major vascular and cardiac disorders.
