Student Health physicians are staff physicians
board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. There are no physician
assistants, nurse practitioners, or residents who work in the clinic.
You are required by the University to pay a Student Health Fee (2005-06
$148.50 per year -- $121.00 for MS I’s). With this fee, you
can access healthcare in the clinic and see a nurse or physician at no
charge for minimal or limited/minor problems. This involves a focused history
and an exam with a straightforward medical decision (e.g., conjunctivitis “pink
eye”).
You are required by law to have medical insurance, which can be through
Auxiliary Enterprises (Megalife) or a private insurance company. You can
be seen in the clinic with Megalife, a PPO plan, or an HMO plan in which
one of the staff is your HMO physician. These insurance companies would
be used for higher complexity visits not covered by your student fees.
Such visits would include a history with an exam involving several body/organ
systems and a low/moderate/high complexity medical decision (i.e. dyspnea
/shortness of breath). For these visits, you may incur a fee if your deductible
has not been met; thereafter, you may be responsible for 20% of the costs.
If you need to see a specialist and do not have a PPO, you can be referred
from your HMO physician. If you have Megalife, once you are referred from
Student Health, you can see UT physicians associated with Megalife without
paying your deductible for the office visit (there is no consultation fee).
In the Student Health Clinic, laboratory services are available (blood
work, urinalysis, rapid strep, pregnancy tests, PAP thin preps etc). These
can be billed to your insurance carrier. With Megalife, only laboratory
work done in the Student Health Clinic will be covered; otherwise, you
may be required to pay your deductible first at an another clinic.
Immunizations are available as well; some are free, others are available
at cost: Varicella, Hepatitis B, Meningococcal, MMR, Tetanus/diphtheria
and pertussis (TDap).
PPDs (TB skin tests) are available for $5.
A Class D pharmacy exists which stocks mainly antibiotics and birth control
pills: these are available for $5 or $10 with Megalife, or $15 or $20 with
private insurance. Some free medication samples are available as prescribed
by a physician, such as antihistamines, etc. |
