Artist: Yuan Xing

I am a second year medical student from Austin, TX. Over the last few years, I have been fortunate enough to travel to many countries and beautiful locations. My desire to capture these sights is what sparked my interest in photography. The photos you see displayed here are from my travels to Venice, Athens, and in our own neighborhood, Galveston.

Throughout my life, most of my extracurricular energy has been focused towards music and the performing arts, so for me, photography is still a relatively new pursuit. I have never had the talent of creating art with my hands, but through photography, I’ve found an outlet for creativity through visual expression. All of us exist in the same objective world, but the way in which we perceive and interpret it is what sets each of us apart. I am drawn to photography because, unlike any other art form, it is not a mere idea or representation, but an actual snapshot of reality. What that “reality” means to each of us though, the symbolism and emotions it elicits, is something that cannot be so easily qualified.
