I’m a ‘hit and miss’ photographer. Luckily the digital camera allows me greater latitude in that ever evolving process in addition to providing the instant gratification of seeing each photo immediately after the shutter has been released. For photographic inspiration, I travel back roads and the rural area where I live looking for opportunities, things others mightn’t have noticed. Some have been surprised that many of the photos I’ve taken are just down the road from where I live. Passersby encounter the pilings in Oak Island on a daily basis but don’t always immediately recognize them in the photo. That’s what I hope to accomplish with my photographs, to elicit recognition, surprise and a different way of seeing every day things and places. Although I don’t take many photos of people, my influences tend to be somewhat controversial photographers that do. I’m drawn to the ethereal, evocative and timeless nature of photographs by Sally Mann and Diane Arbus, whose photos answer some questions and leave others to be pondered.
I continue to be fascinated by the chemical process of capturing images on paper in the darkroom and hope to one-day experiment with large format cameras. In the meantime, I continue to experiment with digital and infrared photography.
