Artist: Eric Rasch
2005 was a year of firsts for Eric Rasch, the Office of Communication's web developer for the Medical School. His new-found passion for photography began in early February 2005, when he purchased his first [digital] SLR camera. He made the leap from a point-n-shoot in preparation for the arrival of his first newborn in October 2005. "I wanted to take better pictures of our baby to document her life with us. I felt I had pushed the point-n-shoot as far as it could go, and I knew it would not be able to keep up with a toddler."
Being a rookie to photography, Eric likes to find new ways to look at everyday settings. He doesn't want to see the same old pose from the standard positions. "Every time I pick up the camera, I learn something new. Every time I ride the rail into work, walk my daughter to park, or drive down the street, I find myself looking at objects differently. I'm always asking myself how would x look from this angle, or in this setting?" Trying to make the uninteresting imaginative remains a lofty goal and his biggest challenge (right behind figuring out how to properly set his ISO, aperture, and shutter speed… and people think computers are difficult).
Utilizing an up-and-coming technique called tilt-shifting, the goal for each photo in the Mini Medical Center series is to leave you asking, "Is this a photo or a model?"
