Artist: Eugenia Mileykovskaya
Eugenia Mileykovskaya is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Research track). She was born in Russia and earned both her Bachelor degree and Ph.D. from Moscow State University while specializing in Bioenergetics and Membrane Biology. Since 1991 she has worked with Professor W. Dowhan in the University of Texas Medical School at Houston on the role of lipids in the functioning of protein complexes in bacterial and mitochondrial membranes
Although Eugenia didn't pursue formal art education, she has devoted a lot of time to painting, photography and ceramics. She has a lot of friends and family connections among artists.
Dr. Mileykovskaya's path to digital art was led by her scientific interests. In 1998 she started using fluorescent microscopy in her work and had to learn a number of image-processing software programs. At first she applied them to her digital photographs trying to minimize what always was considered a strong side of photography, namely its ability to reflect a single moment in life, its "snap shot-ness" and transform them into more symbolic images. This virtual process can be compared with using sketches made by an artist from nature in creation of a painting.
In the next stage she started making compositions, which did not originate from any pre-existing images and were created with drawing of no lines. They can be called "computer-paintings" to emphasize the difference of approach from popular "computer graphics." The process starts with an empty square of the screen and includes only modifications made by different filters and changes of colors and playing with zooming of particular details etc. The technique is based on the dialog of an artist and a machine and the process is captivating. An artist feels herself close to the Abstract Expressionism movement, which refrains from representing any actual objects but focuses on displaying their inner virtues.
