Artist: Philip Chang
Our universe encompasses a variety of living objects and matter. Their existence
and forces are inter-related and bound together by an intangible relationship—Synergy. The "Synergy" drawing, an introductory piece, attempts to express the reciprocal relationship amongst science of nature, botany, architecture, and anatomy.
Free from traditional constraints and criteria of botany art or illustration, Philip's series of drawings, "Domestic Plants", emphasizes the unique characters of form, color, texture, depth, and space found in the life supporting systems of flowers, leaves, branches, and roots within a plant. This system can also be found in many aspects of our surroundings whether created by nature or man. The final timely drawing, "Tangible Memory of September Eleven", is the artist's reflection of a tragic moment when violence disrupted the harmony and Synergy in our intertwined lives.
Philip, an amateur artist, has traveled in Europe, Asia, and America to observe and experience new subject matter to inspire his work. He continues to enrich his drawings by exploring different media in pen and ink, oil, color pencils, and pastel.
The amateur artist came to Houston from Hong Kong in 1958 with a Civil Engineering degree. He obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Architecture at Rice University. As an architect emeritus in the American Institute of Architects and a registered architect in several states, he also practiced Architecture and taught Design and Theory at the University of Hong Kong before his retirement.
He has a unique relationship to the Medical Center. He is father to Audrey Chang, a pediatrician who graduated from the medical school and husband of Lily Chang, who is currently working in the Surgery Department. His retirement has enabled him to pursue his lifelong interest in drawing.
