Artist: Joan Bull
Joan Marie Carlson Bull, M.D. directs the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She received her M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine, did her residency at the University of Chicago and Stanford University School of Medicine, and fellowships in Medical Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine, and at the National Cancer Institute, NIH.
Research in thermal-therapy, teaching, and patient care, her family and their two dogs and cats are her wholehearted interests. She also deeply enjoys opera and physical exercise. Her husband, Philip Tuttle, is a venture capitalist in Houston. Her son, Todd Bull, is an associate professor of medicine in pulmonary medicine at the University of Colorado, in Denver, CO. Her daughter, Lara Bull, will shortly obtain her Ph.D. in epidemiology here at the UT School of Public Health at Houston. Her step-daughter Courtney Tuttle is a senior vice president of Jefferies & Company in New York City, and her step-daughter Ashley Tuttle is in business in Houston. She has four grandchildren, Sasha (1 year), Alexis (4 years), Bennett (2 years), and Cameron (1 year).
She has been making and developing photographs since medical school. She was inspired by the portraits made by Richard Avedon. However she didn’t train more formally in photography until 2000. Because of her interest in portrait photography she became a student of Paul Elledge and Leasha Overturf (Chicago, IL) through the Santa Fe Workshops.
