Artist: Thanh-Tung Bui
After graduating medical school in 1982, Thanh Bui became interested in photography. Initially, she began working with black and white photography under the tutelage of a well-known photographer in Vietnam. Dr. Bui enjoyed the variety of darkroom aspects, including solarization, double negative film, etc. Although her interest began as a hobby, she quickly became passionate about capturing life in her photos.
Dr. Bui finds a great deal of enjoyment in portraying everything she sees in her photography, whether from a positive or negative aspect. To her, everything she encounters has a form of beauty worth illustrating.
Once she came to the United States from Vietnam, Dr. Bui initially was unable to continue her photography as she was busy starting a new life in the field of ultrasound medicine. Currently, she is an important part of the Neurovascular Ultrasound team in the Stroke division of the UT-Houston Department of Neurology. Dr. Bui’s current expertise, medical ultrasonography, shares many similarities to the art of photography. For example, to optimize the clarity of the ultrasound images, she has learned to adjust the lighting (gain), color contrast, aperture, distance, etc…. This skill parallels her photo composition maneuvers and becomes a good combination of work and artwork.
More recently, she was thrilled to return to photography, but found a new challenge as her hobby had now undergone a revolution utilizing digital cameras. Luckily, the new technology allowed her to shoot more freely and without the concern for cost of film and darkroom time. The digital revolution rekindled her interest in shooting for pleasure again.
