Artist: Bryant Boutwell
Dr. Bryant Boutwell has been a writer / photographer for more than 35 years. His interest in photography represents a natural spin-off from his news journalism background, and his writing and photography have been published in numerous publications over the years. His preferred medium is black and white film, and subject matter varies from macro photography to landscapes and people. In recent years, trips to Alaska and Siberia have provided unique opportunities for his camera. Photographs featured here are from two different summer trips to Tomsk, Siberia (2001, 2002) to help rebuild a remote orphanage in the small village of Alexandrovo. Dr. Boutwell was the first American ever to walk the village's potholed street with a camera. In a setting where village cows sleep inside the village's once covered bus stop and graze in the flowerbeds of unfenced village yards, many images from a very different world were put to film. Compare Catherine the Great's privileged view from her Winter Palace in St. Petersburg to the orphanage director's hasty window repairs to convert an abandoned building into classrooms before Siberian winter storms arrive. Dr. Boutwell's photos from Siberian orphanages have been published in Russian newspapers and are now used in New York and Moscow to promote the needs of orphans throughout the former Soviet Union.
