Dean's Message
Welcome to The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Located in the heart of the vibrant Texas Medical Center, the UT Medical School is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and patient care.
The educational and research components of our school are closely linked to the clinical programs, and our students observe and experience the translation of basic science to the patient setting. Through our innovative Surgical and Clinical Skills Center, students may test their educational training in a hands-on environment with robotics, virtual reality simulators, standardized patients, and mannequins, honing their skills before interacting with a true patient.
Our students learn the time honored and tested traditions of healing through the teachings of the John P. McGovern, M.D. Center for Health, Humanities, and the Human Spirit, where Oslerian values are taught and practiced. In our high-tech world, we must not forget about compassion.
Our new six-story Replacement Research Facility will be coming online in 2008, bringing more than 120,000 square-feet of top-notch research space. In addition, we have just renovated our large lecture halls to allow for the latest educational technology and to accommodate an increase in class sizes to meet the needs of a projected national shortage of physicians.
Through our affiliations with Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center, Children’s Memorial Hospital, and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, our students, residents, and fellows are able to experience an incredibly broad patient population and bring hope and health to local and international patients. We have the highest standards for excellence in patient care.
We have great strength in innovation and partnership with the other five schools of the UT Health Science Center and institutions throughout the Texas Medical Center. We are working to further promote these ties and expand this collaborative spirit in our effort to prevent and treat human diseases. Our newly National Institutes of Health-funded Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences is helping to foster such collaborations and help bridge the gaps between the basic sciences and the practical applications of medicine. Our school has every opportunity for greater future success, and I welcome you to be a part of this exciting time in our 35-year history.
