Dean's Message
Welcome to The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Located in the heart of the vibrant Texas Medical Center, the UT Medical School is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and patient care.
The educational and research components of our school are closely linked to our clinical programs, and our students observe and experience the translation of basic science to the patient setting. Through our innovative Surgical and Clinical Skills Center, students may test their educational training in a hands-on environment with robotics, virtual reality simulators, standardized patients, and mannequins, honing their skills before interacting with a true patient.
Our students learn the time honored and tested traditions of healing through the teachings of the John P. McGovern, M.D., Center for Health, Humanities, and the Human Spirit, where Oslerian values are taught and practiced. In our high-tech world, we must not forget about compassion.
With our six-story Replacement Research Facility and The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases, our scientists focus on unraveling the mysteries of disease at the cellular and molecular levels.
Through our affiliations with Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, our students, residents, and fellows are able to experience an incredibly broad patient population and bring hope and health to local and international patients. We have the highest standards for excellence in patient care and as a testament to healthcare quality, have created a network of quality leaders in each clinical department.
We have great strengths in innovation and partnership with the other five schools of the UT Health Science Center and institutions throughout the Texas Medical Center. We are working to further promote these ties and expand this collaborative spirit in our effort to prevent and treat human diseases. Our National Institutes of Health-funded Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences is helping to foster such collaborations and help bridge the gaps between the basic sciences and the practical applications of medicine. Our school has every opportunity for greater future success, and I welcome you to be a part of this exceptional time in our 40-year history.
